Yellowfin: Potentially a Big Win for Idera, But . . .
Idera, a business-to-business (B2B) software provider for developers and other technical users, has acquired Yellowfin, the Australian-based company of business intelligence (BI) and analytics solutions. TEC's BI and data management analyst Jorge Garcia gives us his perspective of what the deal means for Idera and how he hopes it will be realized.

Just a couple of days ago, I came across the news that Idera had just acquired Yellowfin, a business intelligence and analytics company based in Melbourne, Australia.
Idera, a provider of business-to-business (B2B) software including data, developer, and devOps tools, has made the decision to expand into the analytics and business intelligence marketplace by including Yellowfin’s analytics platform into its arsenal and, consequently, directly immersing itself into the enterprise business intelligence and analytics market.
According to Atanas Popov, General Manager of Idera’s Developer Tools Business:
“Yellowfin delivers a critical component of application development that aligns with Idera’s pillars of product excellence: ease of use, quality, and scalability. It expands our portfolio in a new growth area with tremendous potential for cross-sell within our existing ecosystem of customers, partners, and ISVs.”
Yellowfin will be joining the ranks of Idera’s already wide set of existing applications for developers including apilayer, Embarcadero, Filestack, Froala, FusionCharts, LANSA, Sencha, UltraEdit, and Whole Tomato.
From Yellowfin’s perspective, Glen Rabie, Founder and CEO of Yellowfin pointed that:
“Idera provides an excellent home for Yellowfin’s products that greatly extends our scale and geographic reach. We deliver one of the best products in a highly competitive space, which makes me and my colleagues enormously proud. We consistently innovate and our customers receive outstanding value. I am confident this will continue with Idera.”
With presence in 50 countries and more than 3 million users, Idera expects to gain natural entry into the BI and analytics market, gaining a huge opportunity to reinforce their existing software portfolio.
Mr. Rabie is not only a great person but also a savvy executive and connoisseur of the software industry in general and the BI and analytics, in particular. He was able, along with Justin Hewitt (COO), to build a business intelligence software company full of energy and innovation.
Yellowfin was an early adopter of data storytelling as a key part of its BI and analytics offering. The company was also one of the first vendors to provide new technology and practices such as embedded analytics and the recent introduction of new features such as Natural Language Queries (NLQ). Over time, Yellowfin has become an important player within a new generation of vendors in the BI and analytics market, many of whom are focusing on developing products with business users in mind and favouring ease of use.
So, although I have no doubt Mr. Rabie and his team at Yellowfin have taken this step not without a well and thoughtful process, it is now also about how the team at Idera will further enhance growth and innovation for Yellowfin, especially considering that Idera has traditionally focused more heavily on the technical user, rather than the business user.
I think Yellowfin can signify for Idera an opportunity to land a significant footprint in the consumer-based BI and analytics market and make the company grow substantially with a well-planned go-to-market strategy, and I hope they will. It would be a shame to see Yellowfin’s innovation get stuck or sunk without an effective strategy, and believe me, I’ve seen it happen.
Idera has acquired a nice jewel to craft.

What’s In It for the Market?
Well, I’ve been following Yellowfin for quite some time and, in my interactions with the company I had the pleasure and privilege to speak with Yellowfin’s CEO Glen Rabie on numerous occasions.Mr. Rabie is not only a great person but also a savvy executive and connoisseur of the software industry in general and the BI and analytics, in particular. He was able, along with Justin Hewitt (COO), to build a business intelligence software company full of energy and innovation.
