Adding a View, allow field categorization by XML

When I'm creating a View, once I've added my table(s) I have to assign all the fields to a category by hand. Is there a way that this can information can be pulled/inherited from an XML file (or some other method)? Or must this always be done by hand?

Presently, creating these categories at the View level needs to be done through the UI.
