Can I use a child filter without picking the parent? When using dependant filters
6 August, 2012
Hi,
Please, Id like to know if it possible to use the filter dependent feature but in some time Id like to see and click in the filter child before than father field (dependent) ?
Country
State ( dependent of the Country)
City ( dependent of the State)
Customer ( dependent of the City)
Sometimes Id like to click the Customer? Its possible?
If not possible to click first in the customer Id like to know if it possible just keep the fields dependent open and not closed as default?
Thanks

Hi Arthur,
Unfortunately this is not possible, as this would by-pass the dependency and filter validation.
When using dependent filters, the parent must be chosen first, otherwise the child filter cannot populate the correct values.
However, there is a way around using what we call elastic filters .
This is a new type of dependent filter, which is only available via web-services, you cannot set this up from the UI. So if you are not using web-services, you will not be able to use this feature.
Essentially it allows 3 dependent filters to be linked, independently. So if you pick the top filter it flows down the child filter (which is how it normally works), though you can also choose a child filter value, that reloads the filter values of the parent filters.
Like a 3-way dependent filter.
Though in your case, you should be able to click on the 'Customer' filter first, if your parent filters are mandatory. When filters are mandatory, a value must be selected, so by default the top 2 filters will have a value used already.
The Top filter 'Country' can have a default filter value, while any child filters will just use the first value returned in the list.
Please let me know if you have any questions on this.
Regards,
David
