How do I produce a linked master-detail report all on the same page

Is it possible to produce a linked master-detail report so that selecting a row in the master displays just the corresponding detail rows on the same page? I've tried every combination of co-displays/ drills within the report builder and analytics on the dashboards, but can't get what I'm after.

I would have thought that the Drill Through report was the classic example of the master/detail report. What in particular didn't you like about it when you tried it, if we know more about the reporting requirements then we will be able to better advise you.
