Org. RefCodes and Dependent Filters
14 August, 2013
Hi David,
we have recently discovered the power of Org.-RefCodes for bringing our departments and organizational units in a sort order which everyone is used to (instead of an alphabetical order which Yellowfin applies by default). But today we have learned that when using Org.Ref.Codes within a dependent filter chain, the filter values (which are now Org.Ref-Codes) are not selected depending from the filter value selected in the filter before. But instead all filter values are shown without any consideration what has been selected before.
My simple question is: Ist that intended behaviour? Or is there any way to use Org.-Ref.Code within dependent filters?
We would like to have the filter values sorted as the Org.-RefCode are sorted. Is there maybe another way to give the filter values a specific sort order (instead of the default alphabetic sort order)?
Thank you so much for your help!

Hi Sebastian,
That is actually how org ref codes work, organisation reference codes are actually different to filter caching.
With org ref codes, you are just saying 'use this list' , even if you update the values in that column, they will not show when using an org ref code until the org ref code itself is updated.
Here is an example;
I have a column 'City' in my database, and these are the values;
Per
Mel
Syd
I then create an org ref code and set an order and a description;
Mel = Melbourne, sort 1
Syd = Sydney, sort 2
Per = Per, sort 3
When I use the 'City' as a cached filter, I get ;
Mel
Per
Syd
As you can see, the sort is alphabetical, and it's only caching what it has returned.
If I then change the filter from 'Cached value' to 'Reference Codes' I get the list;
Melbourne
Sydney
Perth
If I then add a new value ' Ade' to the column 'City' in my DB.
When I choose cached filter I get ;
Ade
Mel
Per
Syd
When I choose 'Reference Codes' I get ;
Melbourne
Sydney
Perth
Notice it only shows what I originally setup at the view level.
Hope this explains everything and please let us know if you have any additional questions on this.
Regards,
David

Hi David,
Thank you for the information provided about org ref codes. But you are partly missing our point. What I would like to know is about using org ref codes in a dependent filter.
Please find an example below:
I have a column country in DB with the following values :
AUS
GER
USA
I have a column city in DB with the following values :
Mel
Per
Syd
Mun
Ber
Fra
Los
Was
Firstly, I have a filter for country and then a dependent filter for city.
Now if Aus is selected in country filter, only the cities from Aus are available in city filter to be selected.
Dependent city filter values :
Mel
Per
Syd
(This is dependent filter logic which works fine when using cached filter)
However, if we use org ref codes for the cities as follows:
Mel Melbourne
Per Perth
Syd Sydney
Mun Munich
Ber Berlin
Fra Frankfurt
Los Los Angeles
Was Washington
...the dependent filter logic is not applied.
If we use org ref code as a dependent filter, even though Aus is selected in the country filter, all the cities are available in the city filter instead of those belonging only to Aus.
Is that intended behaviour? Or is there any way to use Org.-Ref.Code within dependent filters?
Thank you so much!

Hi Sebastian,
Sorry if I've caused confusion, I think I gave too much info ;).
It all comes down to, org ref codes are treated as a list of values that you have setup at the view.
This list is not linked to any other fields, so cannot be used as a dependant filter.
Unfortunately you cannot have both org ref codes & dependent filters working in the same filter chain.

David
