“Remember” filter settings on dashboards

Hi,

Is it possible to remember a users filter settings for a dashboard, in the same way that individual reports do?

Thanks

Brendon
Hi Brendon,

Dashboards are actually a global object, so having it remember the last user filter value, will actually be for any user that last used the dashboard, as you can see , this will start causing problems when multiple people are using the dashboard.

You can only use, default filter values, or bookmarks, but bookmarks are only set when you first add the report to the dashboard, and really just act like default filter values.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

David
Thanks David,

Is "remembering" filter settings on a per user basis something that YF would consider implementing?

Thanks

Brendon
Hi Brendon,

At this point , short answer is no, as it would mean major DB changes, since we would have to store this information somewhere.
However we will be making quite a few UI changes in the next major release, so something like this may already be on the books, but won't know until later.

David
Thanks David,

Looking forward to seeing the "somthing like this" features in the future.

Thanks

Brendon
Hi,

from what I can tell this feature doesnt exist in YF7. Is that correct? Why is a dashboard a "global object" and a report isnt? ie why can an individual users previous filter setting be remembered for a report they are using (Im assuming many users could be using the same report) but their filters for a dashboard cannot be remembered?

Peter
Hi Peter,

Sorry it's just the way the database was designed. We store a record of each time a report is run, but not for a dashboard.

Sorry for the bad news :(.
Hopefully this can change in the near future.

David
Hi David,

Any new developments on this topic? Is that enhancement planned?

Best regards,
Ingo
I agree that such a feature is very important. Other tools such as QlikView do have this functionality and in my experience, users like it a lot.

We have a "clunky" workaround on this issue in Yellowfin though. Basically, we create a copy of the dashboard for each user and set the Filter default values in the Filter properties of the dashboard (not the report).

Issues with this approach though:

1. It works fine where you have single filters (i.e. non-cascading filters).

2. You can't save any navigation changes (e.g. Drill-down / Drill-Anywhere). This is a shame ...

I agree with the others above ... such functionality at a dashboard level is very important.

... and I would go one step further ... allow the user to also save any navigation changes (e.g. Drill-down / Drill-Anywhere)

Adam
Hi Team

Have there been any further thoughts on this?

We are getting more and more requests for this capability .... it really is a mandatory feature for BI tools these days.

Hi Adam,

I can say that this was recently discussed, but unfortunately do not have an ETA on this.
The problem is, our dashboards are shared between multiple users, so 1 users 'remember me' settings need to differ to another users. So each dashboard would have a separate 'bookmark' of sorts based on user access.
So I think we're going down the path of having user created bookmarks on a dashboard, which can be public or private.

Once I hear of an update I can let you know, but I cannot let you know when exactly that would be sorry!
Hopefully by the end of the month I'll have some form of an update on this request.

In the meantime please let me know if there was anything else you were after.

Regards,
David
