Collaborative Business Intelligence (BI) – the integration of information sharing features and functionality of popular Web 2.0 technologies and social media platforms within a BI platform – has been vaunted by many industry analysts and pundits as the answer to persistently poor BI user adoption rates. A feature-set capable of facilitating pervasive BI deployments, underpinning an analytical culture, and hence supporting improved BI ROI via better, faster enterprise-wide decision-making.

According to research reported by Information Management, best practice Collaborative BI deployments have the ability to improve productivity and visibility across the breadth of organizational operations via enhanced knowledge sharing. The study found that those organizations that embraced and implemented best practice Collaborative BI enjoyed a 44 percent improvement in customer responsiveness, a 42 percent boost in employee productivity, a 30 percent increase in business process efficiency, and a 40 percent rise in BI adoption.
The potential is exciting and nothing short of transformational. And the BI marketplace is taking note.
Wayne Eckerson’s Collaborative Business Intelligence: Optimizing the Process of Making Decisions report found that 87 percent of BI professionals believe that “collaboration tools can have a positive impact on analysis and decision-making activities”, while “58 percent of BI professionals plan to evaluate collaboration features when they purchase their next BI tools”.
But, according to Eckerson’s recent study, of those using BI solutions that already contain collaborative features, only 16 percent actually use those features.
So why are users snubbing the collaborative elements currently available, when there’s such an obviously strong demand for features that can assist collaborative decision-making within a BI environment?
Simply, most BI vendors and practitioners get Collaborative BI wrong.

According to Gartner’s Vice President of Research, Rita Sallam, inadequate decision support processes for BI mean that organizations are still failing to harness the true power of reporting and analytics – despite improvements in technology and increases in spending.
“We see a real gap between the level of information in Business Intelligence and the quality and transparency of decision making,” she said.
